This Rocky Pillars (Stolby) Reserve is a very interesting geological phenomena and product of intensive volcanic activities millions of years ago. We can only imagine what was happening during that time. Scientists suggest that volcanic eruptions of Siberian Plato was so intense and widespread, it covered the sun with ashes for many years causing distinction of dinosaurs. The pillars itself are relics of magma intrusion process. The ones we see today in the Park penetrated the Earth's crust and crystallized in the shape of pillars. The hardness of this intrusions is what is very unique. Just like brave solders, they continue to resist mighty erosion while helping geologists to learn the history of the Earth and entertain visitors of all ages. There are about 100 pillars in the Park, some reach 100 meters (328 feet) high. Many have names for their unique shapes. For example "Lion Gates", "The Old Man", "The Miter", "Feathers" and "Takmak". All together, the pillars and beautiful surrounding mountains covered with Taiga forests make the Reserve a top destination for climbing, sightseeing and hiking.

[Option #1] - "Takmak" Rock Pillar, 4-5 hours: This tour will take you south of Krasnoyarsk city. Our guide will meet you at the train station or hotel. After brief introduction, we will drive for about an 40-60 min along the right bank of Yenisei River to the "Takmak" Rock Pillar site. The Pillar itself is about 100 feet tall, steep, but possible to climb without special gear. There is a phenomenal panorama from the top of the Pillar. You will see endless mountains, the city and Yenisei River. If you don't feel like climbing, there are plenty trails for hiking around the Pillar with spots for panoramic views. After 1-2 hours of trailing the site, we will drive back to Krasnoyarsk.
[Option #2] - "Reserve's Highlights", 8-9 hour: This tour requires good physical condition. It takes you straight into the heart of the Reserve. Our guide will meet you at the train station or hotel. After brief introduction, we will drive for about an hour, but could take up to two depending on the pace and the weather since there are some steep sections and this section, as a whole, is all at an incline. Once amongst the rocks there is not much hiking around involved since they are relatively close to each other. After catching your breath we will head to the first rock called “Little Elephant”. From here we will hike towards the “Grandfather". After "Grandfather" we will visit "Feathers", and also "Lion’s Gate" with good views of some of the more distant rocks of the Reserve. Next we will head to the "Third" and "Forth" rocks, which are the easiest to climb up. If you are full of energy you can keep going and head south towards "Firma" and "Manskaya Baba" Rocks. This is quite a trip adding at least another 7 kilometers to the overall trip. Depending on the time of day we will meet a lot of other people here, some stuck in places they can’t get down from others relaxing and on their way up. Feel free to join!
