Terelj National Park (also called Gorkhi-Terelj from the name of the surrounding Gorkhi mountains) is located in the lower areas of the Hentii (Khentii) mountain wilderness area, only 40 km from the capital which stretches all the way north to the Russian border. It lies within the Tov and Hentii provinces and is very rich in wildlife. The Park is home to over 250 species of birds, and many rare and endangered animals, including the brown bear. You are likely to see wild wolves, bear, boar, maral deer, marmots, lemmings, and moose. The area offers great routes for hiking and sightseeing either along the Tuul River or on the slopes of the gentle Gorkhi mountains. The adventurous can go by horse to Black Lake - a beautiful and challenging ride. Also nearby is Turtle Rock, a reptile-shaped rock formation created by an ancient glacier - you can climb right inside.
